In Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine from India, the term "kapha" refers to one of the three doshas, or constitutional types. The three doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each dosha is associated with a particular set of physical and mental characteristics, and individuals are believed to have a predominant dosha or combination of doshas.
Kapha is associated with the elements of earth and water, and is believed to govern structure and lubrication in the body. People with a predominantly Kapha constitution are said to be strong, sturdy, and well-grounded, with a tendency towards stability and slowness. They may have a larger frame and a lower metabolism, and be prone to gaining weight.
Pitta is the dosha associated with the elements of fire and water, and is believed to govern metabolism and transformation in the body. People with a predominantly Pitta constitution are said to be intelligent, focused, and driven, with a tendency towards intensity and competitiveness. They may have a medium build, strong digestion, and a tendency towards overheating.
In Ayurvedic medicine, imbalances in the doshas are believed to be the root cause of illness, and treatment is aimed at restoring balance to the doshas. This may involve dietary changes, herbal remedies, and lifestyle modifications, as well as massage and other bodywork techniques.
