In Ayurveda, kapha is one of the three doshas, or fundamental biological energies, that are believed to govern the body's functions. The other two doshas are vata and pitta. Each person is believed to have a unique combination of the three doshas, and imbalances in any of the doshas can lead to physical and mental health issues.
Kapha is associated with the water and earth elements, and is said to govern structure, stability, and lubrication in the body. It is responsible for providing the body with strength, support, and endurance. People with a predominantly kapha constitution are often described as being strong, sturdy, and physically resilient. They tend to have a slower metabolism, and may gain weight easily.
Kapha imbalances can manifest in a number of ways, including excessive weight gain, sluggishness, congestion, and an excess of mucus. To maintain balance, people with a kapha constitution may benefit from a diet that is light and warming, and from regular physical activity. They may also benefit from reducing their intake of heavy, oily, or sweet foods, and from avoiding cold and damp environments.
